Dear Fellow Sheiks,
Like all Sheiks, I am saddened by our loss of Dick Rippey. He was an extraordinary
human being and even better mentor. I remember him as a rookie coach at LeConte
under Coach Hills. He was always to the point and as Coach Hills would say "He
took care of his own disciplinary problems!" Unfortunately those of us from S'66
didn't get to experience him at Hollywood but I got reconnect with him during the years
leading up to our Centennial when I made the documentary on our first 100 years.
Dick was so knowledgeable about the history of HHS we decided he would be the perfect
Sheik to narrate the video. After that we met for numerous dinners together and I got to
know him as a good friend with much in common with me. He was very generous and
contributed to the school's scholarship fund memorializing his wife who had passed away
a few years earlier. My family also has a fund we established over 40 years ago and this year
I plan to give away two scholarships to deserving students in Athletics in honor of Dick.
The Alumni association needs your help in keeping up our custom of giving scholarships
to deserving students. Please donate to the Association so we can continue this tradition.
As Dick would enthusiastically say: "GO SHEIKS"! We miss you Dick!
