I understand the ROTC program is going to be discontinued.
This is a tragedy. The program helped and saved a lot of students who would have otherwise involved themselves in less than positive activites. The program and it's leadership gave me desperately needed positive guidance at at time when I most needed it. It also helped me to develop leadership skills and a work ethic that assisted me through out my entire life. I am so GREATFULL for the ROTC program, SFC Overleesh, and MSGT Muncy.
This program builds leaders and saves lives. Discontinuing is a diservice both the students who benefit from the program and this great nation some will will ultimately serve.

Sad to hear that the ROTC program was discontinued. I was the Battalion Commander for the Class of 66'. I was raised by by a single mother and the program instilled in me discipline and a work ethic that has carried me through my life. Sgt. Noe was a true mentor for me.

I know it’s been almost a year since this blog post but was the JROTC program indeed canceled? I was Bn XO and C/COL when I graduated in 1980, and it was a great training ground for leadership and public speaking which I was able to parlay into several leadership and staff development roles throughout my life. It actually provided plenty of source material for amusing stories throughout the years since. I even recall MSG Muncy and SP7 Overleese railing on me for not letting them know of my intention to apply to the USAFA because they would have facilitated the recommendation process. To see their faces was indescribable but being threatened with their paddle was even funnier (yes, they had a paddle in their office at that time, and it did see use tho’ not on me)! Good times and many hours spent in the armory, on the rifle range, and on the football field doing drills. And, of course, winning All-City in drill team and staff competitions was just icing on the cake. It truly is a shame to hear that JROTC’s going or gone from HHS, especially since HHS was among the first schools in the nation to adopt the program in 1919. Good memories...but such a loss.

To anyone,

Does anyone know what is the status of MSGT Muncy?

Greetings,

That is hard to swollow, especially some of us who were Cub Scout, Boy Scout and then ROTC, before going into the military.

With them many trip that went to Camp Pendleton and Ft. Mc Author over the years, it gave many the opportunity to start forming their future before graduating from high school.

JR ROTC gave many of us an edge before going into the active military. With the training, we did not go into basic training as dummies, but traininees who knew something about the military. For me, after moving to Pomona from Hollywood, was not an obsticle for me to continue something that I really loved. I thank God that I graduated in 1973 and was able to go to Ft. Polk Lousiana for basic training and on. That enlistment (National Guard at first) took me to 1991.

Men, do what you can do to get a young man under your wing and teach him something that will keep him on the straight and narrow. If his vision is the military, help get him some exposure. These kids dream can't die just because a program dies! Let's do this

JP

PS: My daughter was in the ROTC and then one of her sons and her daughter was. Now my grandson is in the Army reserves and just reenlisted and will ETS in 2023!
