February 19, 1937 - January 31, 2012
Born and raised in Hollywood, California, parents Harry and Elizabeth (Lee). Passed away at home surrounded by his loving family who meant everything to him. Survived by devoted wife and love of his life, Sharil, loving children Greg (Danette), Doug, Sherie (Mark) Thielen and step-children Chris (Kristi) Murphy and Shonna (Lee) Halterman. Also survived by brother Lyle (Kathie), uncle LeRoy (Pat) Hilker, cousin Katherine (Bill) Korbholz, extended family, and the lights of his life, his precious 12 grandchildren (Kurt, Alexandra, Trevor, Scott, Brett, Garrett, Nicole, Shaun, Ethan, Adam, Molly and Jack). We will miss our Pops, the heart and soul of our family.
After graduating Hollywood High and UCLA, and service in the Army, he worked at ITT Gilfillan, Van Nuys, for 36 years receiving numerous accolades including the Distinguished Technical Communications and the President's Awards. Retiring as Publications Manager in 1997 enabled him to pursue his life long passion for creating crossword puzzles, resulting in publication of over 200 puzzles in books and major newspapers. Gary was an artist, jazz pianist and writer who generously shared his talents with family and friends by designing: coffee cups, logos, stationery, picture calendars, holiday cards, brochures, news letters, tunes and lyrics and so much more. Bridge was a favorite pastime played at Porter Valley Country Club and the Friday group. He loved all sports, playing basketball, golf, proudly pitching softball at age 50, coaching Little League baseball, and going to games, especially those of his children and grandchildren.
Our family thanks Kaiser Woodland Hills, especially Dr. Gary Schwartz and the oncology staff that he loved and felt were like family during his 7 year battle with advanced prostate cancer, and also Nassrin Javanshir his case manager and friend.
Memorial service to be held Thursday, February 23, 2012, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Stephen Presbyterian Church, Chatsworth. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Prostate Cancer Research Institute www.pcri.org or charity of your choice .
