Hollywood High School Listed in the National Register of Historic Places

January 23, 2012 - Hollywood, California: The Director of the National Park Service announced that  Hollywood High School was listed in the National Register of Historic Places this month.

The National Register nomination of the Hollywood High School Historic District was submitted to Washington, DC for the final step in the process to recognize its history and architecture and was approved.

In an earlier step in the process, the California State Historical Resources Commission unanimously found the Hollywood High School Historic District  eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion A at the local level of significance for its association with the entertainment industry and the development of Hollywood, and under Criterion C at the local level of significance for its PWA Moderne architecture designed by the regionally significant firm of Marsh, Smith and Powell.

The Hollywood High School Alumni Association (hhsalum.org) funded an initiative to begin this process through charitable donations to ensure the preservation of the legacy of Hollywood High School. Sharyn Romano, a Hollywood High School Alumni Association board member and founder of the Hollywood Beautification Team (hbteam.org) catalyzed a meeting with Linda Dishman of the Los Angeles Conservancy to encourage the Alumni Association to allocate resources.

The nomination was prepared by students of Hollywood High School and Kennedy High School; under the supervision of Christy Johnson McAvoy, Founding Principal, and assisted by Christine Lazzaretto, Senior Architectural Historian, Historic Resources Group.

Historic Resources Group, LLC, is a nationally recognized expert in historic preservation planning and development.

Jaime Morales, the school’s current principal reacted immediately to the news by stating “Many generations have attended Hollywood High School and have found in it a pathway to success in one way or another. The history of the school is the history of Los Angeles. Many dreams have become a reality and many more are still to come.”

“We received many letters of support and the nomination was approved by the Commission to be submitted to the Keeper of the National Register,” stated Amy H. Crain, State Historian II at the Registration Unit of  the Office of Historic Preservation in Sacramento (ohp.parks.ca.gov). The Commission approved the nomination on October 28, 2011.

The nomination was forwarded to the Keeper of the National Register under cover of a letter from State Historic Preservation Officer Milford Wayne Donaldson, FAIA; and received formal approval on January 4, 2012.
